Escape to Cornwall
Growing up in Norfolk and surrounded by countryside will always mean there is a piece of “the country girl” within me. After every exotic trip I had booked this year (2020 let’s not) being cancelled due to Covid-19 it was time that I looked a little closer to home, which is why I planned UK Stay-cation in Cornwall, a place I have never been but have always wanted to visit.
Rolling hills, vast moorlands and quaint picturesque towns oozing with history and Cornish pasties, it felt like the perfect place to cosy up in for a week of relaxation before Christmas (and my birthday). So what did we get up to and where do I recommend visiting I hear you asking…
We stayed in a cottage like something from the film “The Holiday”, in the middle of nowhere with a roaring fire and outdoor hot tub. As this was booked as a surprise for my birthday I don’t know the exact booking details to link it for you BUT, I am sure with a bit of research you’ll find something equally as stunning for your own stay in the Cornish countryside. Every winding road we turn down we find another picture perfect cottage for holiday rental.
For this trip I was fortunate enough to partner with Audi UK, allowing me the pleasure of cruising around in a Q7 TFSI e, a plug in hybrid. This really made the trip so much more fun! The Q7 was the perfect driving companion for the winding, muddy moorlands of Cornwall, with the driver assist feature that slows the car down automatically for slowing traffic or road blocking Highland cows, I felt like I was in something from the future. I could have sat and played around with all the different buttons for days, heat seat (who doesn’t love a warm butt), eco heating control, auto headlights and auto windscreen wipers, yep that’s right, the car is so clever if it rains or feels something on the windscreen the wind screen wipers automatically get to work! Madness! Oh and not to mention the touch screen navigations system. It’s just a fab car to be honest! Mikko even loved it, he had the whole back seat to himself to spread his paws out on for our day trips out to the Cornish coastline.
First stop: Port Isaac
The water here is crystal blue, if it was summer you’d want to take a dip. We walked into the narrow streets of the village stopping for a delicious home made cream tea at the one and only cafe that was open this time of year. We watched the fishermen come in on the boats, we walked up the steps to the top of the cliff, jumping over cow pats as we went and back down again. The views were gorgeous, with a peak of a blue cloud at one point it really was stunning, albeit a tad cold. To this day I still can’t believe I haven’t ever been to Cornwall! I have definitely been missing out. This place has so much going for it, no matter what the weather.
Next stop: Polperro
Ok this place was full of cuteness, a fishing harbour filled with coloured houses, scones & clotted cream galore, a traditional pub serving home made food and the best thing of all, the dog deli. As a child when ever we went to the beach we would be allowed a stick of rock, the dog deli was just that, a sweet shop for dogs and of course it being a local independent business made it even easier to spend money in, after all it was Mikko’s holiday too! Definitely one to bookmark and visit, the twists and turns of the narrow streets lead you to a different local shop or freshly baked cake shop every time making this place a delicious little haven of goodies for all the family.
Now you might be thinking we didn’t do that much considering we stayed for a week but the point of this trip was to unwind and relax and do as little as possible whilst still having a little explore a couple days. It was dreamy in so many ways, even when it rained and the log fire was crackling away, it just felt homely and perfect. Really cannot recommend a stay-cation in that neck of the woods enough.
Thanks for reading, I hope you have wonderful rest of the year!
